Wallingford Little League's Championship Friday was one for the ages as three thrilling games provided new champions and brought an exciting end to the 2018 Double A, Triple A and Majors seasons.
In Double A, a single run provided the difference as Valenti Auto eeked out a 1-0 victory over Pawloski Auto Body and took home the title of 2018 Double A Champion. The nail biter featured stellar pitching and great defense.
Over in the Triple A division, it took seven innings to decide that the Patriots were the champions of AAA. The Patriots held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the 6th, but Vertucci Auto stormed back for four runs to tie the game and force a 7th inning. In extra inning the Patriots managed to score two runs and then counted on their pitching to shut down Vertucci and secure the 7-5 victory.
Not to be outdone, it took 2-1/2 thrilling hours, 8 innings and two comebacks for Ulbrich to capture the coveted Majors Division championship title with a 9-8 victory over defending champion VFW. In a hard fought game with great pitching, VFW took the lead in the 7th only to be matched by Ulbrich in bottom half of the inning. In the 8th, VFW’s Jamie Lynch hit a grand slam to put them up by 4. But Ulbrich battled back again and Alec Brockett hit a walk off single to score Jay Chase from second and end a wild and exciting game.
It was a great night to cap off an incredible week of playoff baseball. Congratulations to the winners and to all who participated in these games.
The Patriots won the AAA Championship on Friday in a thrilling seven inning game at Community Lake, beating Vertucci Automotive.
Vertucci tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, by scoring four runs and sending the game into extra innings.
Congratulations to both teams on a great season!!!
